Biobased Materials
A recent government initiative mandates an increase in the number of biobased products purchased over next two years. This change will ultimately result in a 50 percent increase in new products that are designated as biobased.
So what are biobased products and why are they good for us? Biobased manufacturing relies on products developed from farm-grown plants instead of harmful chemical or petroleum bases. This process not only improves the quality of our consumer goods, but also supports both agriculture and manufacturing industries in the U.S.!
A new Executive Order: Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade (EO 13693) has also placed restrictions on industrial, landscaping, and agricultural water use, reducing water consumption by two percent annually through 2025.
SYNLawn partnered with the United Soybean Board (USB) to incorporate soybean oil into our artificial turf backing. According to a UL third-party verification, SYNLawn’s exclusive BioCel™ turf displaces 60 percent of petroleum-based polyurethane found in traditional synthetic lawns. Not only do our products save water, but they also use natural, renewable resources.
“We know that when biobased products are used, it’s going to create new manufacturing opportunities in rural areas and we also know that it’s going to reduce our reliance on foreign oil,” said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

Recycling Initiatives
“On average, two bottles out of 10 are recycled in America today,” says Doug Giles, Universal Textile Technologies’ director of marketing.
SYNLawn believes a 20 percent recycling rate is too low. We took steps to increase awareness of recycling programs available to the general public by partnering with Universal Textile Technologies (UTT), Grand Teton National Park, Teton County Solid Waste and Recycling, CPE, Inc., and the United Soybean Board (USB).
Under our new environmental efforts, plastic bottles recycled at Grand Teton National Park are now used in SYNLawn backing. Termed the PET Park Project, recycled plastic bottles enable consumers to feel good about both the beverages they drink – and the grass they walk on.
Giles elaborates, “We hope the PET Park Project will increase awareness of the many opportunities for Americans to participate.”
